The Wayne County Men's Amateur Committee has announced the dates and venues for the 2003 Wayne County Men's Amateur Golf Championships. The tournament will kick off on Friday, July 11, 2003 at Southern Wayne Country Club.
Southern Wayne, which is known for its small, Bermuda grass greens and lush fairways, returns to the tournament rotation after an off year during which it hosted a very successful county junior tournament. According to Southern Wayne professional Howard Hunt, he and his staff are excited about the tournament's return to Southern Wayne and are confident that the golf course will provide a challenging and enjoyable opening round for this year's participants.
The second round of the 2003 event will be contested at Lane Tree Golf Club on Saturday, July 12. Lane Tree, long known for its challenging length, scenic, rolling fairways, and smooth-as-silk greens, should provide the ideal "moving day" challenge for the contestants as they vie for the coveted championship flight positions in the final round on Sunday, July 13 at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.
This will mark the first year GMGC has hosted the final round of the tournament and its narrow, tree lined fairways and its assortment of challenging par four holes will no doubt insure that the eventual champions are indeed deserving of their titles. Entry forms for the 2003 tournament's expanded field of 150 will be available at each golf course and other golf outlets in the area on May 1, 2003. The entry fee, which includes practice rounds at each course (cart fees must be paid), remains $90.
The committee also announced the creation of "The Amateur Cup", a 20 inch high, silver chalice symbolic of excellence in amateur golf in Wayne County. The Cup will be engraved with the names of all open division, senior division, and super senior division champions since the inception of the tournament and will be displayed at all four participating courses for three months of each year.
